Shifting stones and changing homes: using toolstone ratios to consider relative occupation span in the northwestern Great Basin

چکیده

Like Paleoindian populations elsewhere in North America, Pre-Archaic groups in the Great Basin are assumed to have been highly mobile and far ranging. This view is commonly based on analyses of lithic technology and source provenance studies. While these approaches have added to our knowledge of PreArchaic lifeways, they have rarely focused on occupation span e an aspect of hunteregatherer behavior directly related to mobility. Here, I use the proportions of local and nonlocal toolstone in Pre-Archaic and later Archaic assemblages to consider occupation span with the assumption that assemblages should become increasingly dominated by local materials as occupation span increases. The results suggest that residential mobility was high and occupations short before 7500 radiocarbon years ago. Conversely, between 7500 and 1300 radiocarbon years ago, residential mobility decreased and many locations were occupied for extended periods. Occupation span once again decreased as residential mobility increased after 1300 radiocarbon years ago. These trends were likely influenced by changes in the environmental and demographic climate of the Holocene. 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Paleoindian technological provisioning strategies in the northwestern Great Basin

Great Basin populations during the PleistoceneeHolocene Transition (PHT) are often characterized as being mobile and focused on wetlands; however, the factors that influenced where Paleoindians selected residential campsites are poorly understood. Using predictions derived from optimal foraging-based patch choice models and GIS reconstructions of the PHT landscape, some researchers have argued ...

Correlation of total serum IgE and density of house dust mites with severity of Atopic Dermatitis

Background and aim: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing skin disease that commonly begins during infancy and early childhood. Research studies refers to a relationship between exacerbation of atopic dermatitis and exposure to house dust mite (HDM), but the role of HDM in the pathogenesis of AD is controversial. The objecitve of this study was to assess the correlation of density...

Active tectonic evidences related to the Main Recent Fault in the Sarvabad region, NW Iran

-Introduction The Main Recent Fault (MRF) is a seismic structure on the northwestern boundary of the Zagros belt and southern border of the Sanandaj-Sirjan belt. This fault as a major strike-slip fault consists of several segments in the Zagros collision zone. The seismic activity of the southwestern segments is greater than the northwestern segments. Several earthquake events have occurred al...

Late Pleistocene and early Holocene rivers and wetlands in the Bonneville basin of western North America

Field investigations at Dugway Proving Ground in western Utah have produced new data on the chronology and human occupation of late Pleistocene and early Holocene lakes, rivers, and wetlands in the Lake Bonneville basin. We have classified paleo-river channels of these ages as “gravel channels” and “sand channels.” Gravel channels are straight to curved, digitate, and have abrupt bulbous ends. ...
